History Teacher – based in Sheikh, Somaliland
We are seeking a passionate history teacher who excels in her/his ability to teach and support students and build up students’ knowledge of historical concepts and events within the country and globally, while creating interesting lessons based on a well-balanced curriculum. The history teacher should take endless pride to design inspiring and engaging lesson plans and teaching units. Role: History Teacher
Location: Sheikh, Somaliland
Reporting to: Head Teacher
Contract Type: Fixed Term (One Year)
Key duties and Responsibilities:
Working in close collaboration with the Head Teacher, the teacher will be responsible for 1
designing and providing lessons and learning opportunities that are engaging, show a depth of teacher subject competence and allow students to develop and demonstrate critical subject skills and knowledge.
Monitor and track each student’s development and provide the necessary support to ensure
academic excellence and overall development.
Discuss prominent historical figures, dates, and events with students and ensure that they understand circumstances without the propaganda attached to them.
Create instructional resources on history lessons and ensure that students understand the motivation behind events.
Encourage students to look at multiple viewpoints and make their judgments about the
motivations behind historical events.
Administer history tests and give out assignments and check both according to specific marking directives.
Assist students in comprehending the significance of social and political issues.
Design lesson presentations and encourage students to take an active part in discussions. Manage student behaviour in the classroom and common areas by enforcing school rules
Provide student counselling and support by working together with school leadership and other teachers.
Plan and prepare lesson plans. scheme of work, and instructional materials.Assign, correct, grade, and give feedback on classwork, homework, and tests.
Actively participate and deliver tutorials, co-curricular activities and other activities conducted in a boarding school environment and as stipulated by the Ministry of Education.
Supporting the recruitment process of new students for the Secondary School as appropriate.
Prepare and guide students in career development and post-secondary education. Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the line manager.
Skills and Qualifications
BA or MA in History or a similar discipline.
At least 5 years of experience in teaching History or similar discipline.
Passion for the subject matter and teaching, with a commitment to student success.
Capable of developing and presenting appropriate, creative, and adaptable curriculum. Strong classroom management skills.
Excellent English fluency both verbal and written.
Energetic, with a strong work ethic and of good moral character: honest, trustworthy, and dependable must be willing to teach in Sheikh.
Experience working in an internationally based organisation or international school setting will be considered an added advantage.
Proficient in Word, Excel, Email usage, Google Suite, internet searching and willing to learn new computer skills.
Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills in Somali and fluency in English.
Self-assured, internally motivated, and passionate educator with outstanding communication skills, driven to succeed and make a difference.
Achieves quality results and service.
Should possess high levels of integrity, resilience, accountability, commitment and determination, and be willing to serve as an outstanding role model in the community.
Able to demonstrate learner-centered teaching methodologies and eagerness to continue to learn.
Dedicated team player with demonstrable experience in problem-solving.
Committed to and passionate about teaching and highly motivated towards student development and growth.
Must be of good moral character, honest, trustworthy, and dependable. Ability to provide a safe, positive learning environment for students.
